Old-Fashioned Salisbury Steak
Classic comfort food featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in rich brown onion gravy. Perfect served over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
🛒 Ingredients
For the Steaks:
1 ½ lbs (680 g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
¼ cup milk
1 small onion, finely minced
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Gravy:
2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon ketchup (optional, for depth)
Salt & pepper to taste
👩‍🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Mix the Patties
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, minced onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Mix gently (don’t overwork).
Form into 4–6 oval patties.
2️⃣ Brown the Steaks
Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Brown patties on both sides (about 4–5 minutes per side).
They don’t need to be fully cooked yet.
Remove and set aside.
3️⃣ Make the Onion Gravy
In the same skillet, melt butter.
Add sliced onions and cook until soft and caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes.
Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth.
Add Worcestershire sauce and ketchup.
Simmer until thickened (about 3–5 minutes).
4️⃣ Simmer Together
Return patties to the skillet.
Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, until cooked through and tender.
🍽️ Serve With:
Creamy mashed potatoes
Buttered egg noodles
Steamed green beans
