Ultimate Stacked Patty Melt
Juicy double beef patties, sweet caramelized onions, and melty cheese stacked between crispy, buttery toasted bread — this is comfort food at its best.
🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the Patties
1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
For the Onions
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
Pinch of salt
For Assembly
8 slices rye bread (or sourdough/Texas toast)
8 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar or American cheese
4 tablespoons softened butter (for toasting)
Optional Sauce (Highly Recommended)
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon pickle relish
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Caramelize the Onions
Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
Cook slowly for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deep golden and soft.
Remove from skillet and set aside.
2️⃣ Prepare the Patties
In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
Divide into 8 thin patties (slightly larger than the bread slices since they shrink).
Cook in a hot skillet over medium-high heat for 2–3 minutes per side.
Do not overcook — keep them juicy.
3️⃣ Make the Sauce (Optional)
Mix mayo, ketchup, Dijon, and relish in a small bowl.
4️⃣ Assemble the Stacked Patty Melt
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
On the unbuttered side layer:
Swiss cheese
1 beef patty
Caramelized onions
Cheddar (or American) cheese
Second beef patty
More onions (optional)
Another slice of Swiss
Top with bread (butter side facing out)
5️⃣ Grill to Perfection
Heat skillet over medium.
Cook sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until bread is golden brown and cheese is fully melted.
If very thick, lower heat slightly and cover briefly to melt cheese without burning bread.
