Old-Fashioned Church Cake
🧾 Ingredients
🧁 Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
½ cup butter (melted)
1 tsp vanilla extract
🍯 Glaze (Classic Church Icing):
½ cup butter
¼ cup milk
3–4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat & prepare
    Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
    Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix the batter
In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Add buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla.
    Mix until smooth (don’t overmix).
  3. Bake
    Pour into prepared pan.
Bake 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Make the glaze
In a saucepan, melt butter with milk.
Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Glaze while warm
Pour the glaze over the warm cake so it soaks in slightly.
    Let set before slicing.
😋 Tips for that “church kitchen” taste:
Add chopped pecans or coconut to the glaze for a Southern-style twist.
Use real buttermilk for the best flavor (or milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice as a substitute).
    Serve slightly warm—it’s irresistible!
