Amish White Bread
Soft, fluffy, slightly sweet homemade bread with a tender crumb and golden crust. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or fresh with butter and jam.
🛒 Ingredients (Makes 2 Loaves)
2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
⅔ cup granulated sugar
1½ tablespoons active dry yeast (2 packets)
1½ teaspoons salt
¼ cup vegetable oil
6 cups all-purpose flour (plus more if needed)
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Activate the Yeast
In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water.
Stir in yeast and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2️⃣ Make the Dough
Add salt and oil to the yeast mixture.
Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
Knead on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
(You can also knead with a stand mixer using a dough hook.)
3️⃣ First Rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat.
Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
4️⃣ Shape & Second Rise
Punch down dough.
Divide into 2 equal portions.
Shape into loaves and place into two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until dough rises about 1 inch above pan.
5️⃣ Bake
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake for 25–30 minutes, until tops are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.
🧈 Tips for Perfect Bread
Water should be warm, not hot (hot water kills yeast).
Brush tops with melted butter right after baking for a softer crust.
For extra softness, replace ½ cup water with warm milk.
