Chinese Pepper Steak with Onion (Better Than Takeout!)
A classic stir-fry inspired by Chinese-American restaurants — tender beef strips, crisp bell peppers, and sweet onions in a savory soy-based sauce.
🛒 Ingredients
For the beef:
1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
1/4 tsp black pepper
For the stir-fry:
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 large onion, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
2 tbsp oil (vegetable or peanut)
For the sauce:
1/3 cup beef broth
3 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp black pepper
👩‍🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Marinate the Beef
In a bowl, mix beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and black pepper.
Let sit for 15–20 minutes.
2️⃣ Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, sugar, and black pepper. Set aside.
3️⃣ Cook the Beef
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
Add beef in a single layer and cook 2–3 minutes until browned.
Remove and set aside.
4️⃣ Stir-Fry Vegetables
Add remaining oil to the pan.
Add onion, bell peppers, garlic, and ginger.
Stir-fry 3–4 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
5️⃣ Combine Everything
Return beef to the pan.
Pour in the sauce and stir well.
Cook 2–3 minutes until sauce thickens and coats everything beautifully.
6️⃣ Serve Hot
Serve over steamed white rice or fried rice.
