Classic Shepherd’s Pie


🥧 Classic Shepherd’s Pie

🛒 Ingredients
Mashed Potato Topping:
2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled & chopped
4 tbsp butter
1/2 cup milk (or cream)
Salt & pepper to taste
Meat Filling:
1 lb (450g) ground lamb (traditional)
(or ground beef for cottage pie)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 cup beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp thyme (or Italian seasoning)
Salt & pepper to taste
👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make mashed potatoes
    Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (15–20 minutes).
    Drain and mash with butter and milk.
    Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook the filling
    Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    Cook ground lamb until browned.
    Add onion and cook until soft.
    Stir in garlic and cook briefly.
  3. Build flavor
    Add tomato paste and cook 1–2 minutes.
    Pour in broth and Worcestershire sauce.
    Add vegetables and thyme.
    Simmer for 10–15 minutes until thickened.
  4. Assemble
    Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
    Spread meat mixture in a baking dish.
    Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly.
    Use a fork to create texture on top.
  5. Bake
    Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden on top.
    Optional: broil 2–3 minutes for extra crispiness.
