Old-Fashioned Church Cake
🧾 Ingredients
🧁 Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
½ cup butter (melted)
1 tsp vanilla extract
🍯 Glaze (Classic Church Icing):
½ cup butter
¼ cup milk
3–4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
👩🍳 Instructions
- Preheat & prepare
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. - Mix the batter
In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Add buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla.
Mix until smooth (don’t overmix). - Bake
Pour into prepared pan.
Bake 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. - Make the glaze
In a saucepan, melt butter with milk.
Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. - Glaze while warm
Pour the glaze over the warm cake so it soaks in slightly.
Let set before slicing.
😋 Tips for that “church kitchen” taste:
Add chopped pecans or coconut to the glaze for a Southern-style twist.
Use real buttermilk for the best flavor (or milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice as a substitute).
Serve slightly warm—it’s irresistible!
