3–4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
½ cup milk
2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for a touch of sweetness)

1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
½ teaspoon paprika or nutmeg (optional)
1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Gruyère, or mozzarella)
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven
Set oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish. - Prepare sauce
In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
Stir in cream, milk, brown sugar (if using), salt, pepper, and spices. Heat gently (do not boil). - Layer the potatoes
Arrange a layer of sliced sweet potatoes in the dish.
Pour a little sauce over and sprinkle some cheese.
Repeat layers until everything is used, finishing with sauce and cheese on top. - Cover & bake
Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. - Uncover & finish
Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until golden, bubbly, and potatoes are tender. - Rest & serve
Let sit for 10 minutes before serving—this helps it set nicely.
Tips & Variations
Add cooked ground beef or shredded chicken for a full meal.
For a savory version, skip sugar and cinnamon and add thyme or rosemary.
Top with crushed nuts (pecans or walnuts) for a crunchy finish.
Want it extra creamy? Add a layer of cream cheese between layers 😋
