Cabbage Rolls (Stuffed Cabbage)
Tender cabbage leaves filled with seasoned meat and rice, baked in a rich tomato sauce — classic comfort food.
🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
For the Rolls:
1 large green cabbage
1 lb (500 g) ground beef (or beef & pork mix)
1 cup cooked white rice
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
For the Sauce:
2 cups tomato sauce
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
½ teaspoon dried thyme or Italian seasoning
½ cup water or beef broth
👩‍🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Cabbage
Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
Core the cabbage and carefully place it in boiling water.
Cook 3–5 minutes until outer leaves soften.
Remove leaves gently and set aside to cool.
Trim the thick stem at the base of each leaf.
2️⃣ Make the Filling
In a bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
Mix until just combined (don’t overmix).
3️⃣ Roll the Cabbage
Place about 2–3 tablespoons of filling near the bottom of a leaf.
Fold sides inward and roll tightly like a burrito.
Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
4️⃣ Prepare the Sauce
In a bowl, mix tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, thyme, and water/broth.
5️⃣ Assemble & Bake
Spread a little sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down.
Pour remaining sauce over the top.
Cover tightly with foil.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 60–75 minutes until cabbage is tender and meat is cooked through.
6️⃣ Rest & Serve
Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
Spoon extra sauce over each roll.
