Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions
Tender strips of beef stir-fried with crisp bell peppers and onions in a savory, glossy sauce — better than takeout!
🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)
1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or Shaoxing wine)
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 large onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
1/4 cup beef broth (or water)
1 teaspoon oyster sauce (optional, for deeper flavor)
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
Optional:
Red chili flakes for heat
Sliced green onions for garnish
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Marinate the Beef
In a bowl, combine:
Soy sauce
Cornstarch
Rice vinegar
Sugar
Black pepper
Add sliced steak and toss to coat.
Let marinate 15–20 minutes.
2️⃣ Sear the Steak
Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat.
Add beef in a single layer (cook in batches if needed).
Sear 1–2 minutes per side until browned but not overcooked.
Remove and set aside.
3️⃣ Stir-Fry Vegetables
Add remaining oil to pan.
Stir-fry onions and bell peppers for 2–3 minutes (keep slightly crisp).
Add garlic and ginger, cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
4️⃣ Make the Sauce
Return beef to pan.
Add beef broth and oyster sauce.
Stir-fry 1–2 minutes until sauce thickens and coats everything.
Finish with sesame oil.
5️⃣ Serve
Serve immediately over:
Steamed white rice
Fried rice
Lo mein noodles
Garnish with green onions or chili flakes.
