Patty Melt (with Secret Sauce)
✅ Ingredients
For the patties:
500 g (1 lb) ground beef
Salt & black pepper
½ tsp garlic powder
For the onions:
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
Pinch of salt
For the sandwiches:
8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
8 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
Butter for grilling
🔥 Secret Sauce
¼ cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp mustard
1 tbsp finely chopped pickles or relish
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp garlic powder
Mix everything together and chill while cooking.
👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions
    Melt butter in a pan over medium-low heat
    Add onions + pinch of salt
    Cook slowly for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until golden and sweet
  2. Cook the patties
    Season beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder
    Form thin patties (slightly larger than bread)
    Cook in a skillet 3–4 minutes per side until browned
    Set aside
  3. Assemble
    Butter one side of each bread slice
    On unbuttered side:
    Add cheese
    Place beef patty
    Add caramelized onions
    Spread secret sauce
    Top with another slice of cheese
    Close sandwich (buttered side facing out)
  4. Grill
    Cook sandwiches in a skillet over medium heat
    Grill 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crispy and cheese melts
  5. Serve
    Slice and serve hot with fries or a salad
    💡 Tips for the BEST Patty Melt
    Press sandwich slightly while grilling for crispiness
    Use a mix of Swiss + cheddar for extra flavor
    Cook low and slow so bread doesn’t burn before cheese melts
